SgtMaj Carlton Wayne Kent: A Legacy of Service
Born on November 5, 1957, in Memphis, Tennessee, SgtMaj Carlton Kent embarked on his remarkable journey of service to our nation after graduating from South Side High School in Memphis. His career in the United States Marine Corps spans over three decades, marked by a series of distinguished assignments and leadership roles.
SgtMaj Kent's military career began with his enlistment and completion of recruit training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island, South Carolina, in March 1976. He quickly distinguished himself, serving with the 1st Marine Brigade before being assigned to the Marine Security Guard Battalion, where he protected U.S. Embassies in Kinshasa, Zaire, and Panama.
Throughout his career, SgtMaj Kent demonstrated exceptional leadership and commitment, taking on roles that included Drill Instructor at Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego, California, and various command positions across different Marine units and educational institutions. His journey culminated in his appointment as the 16th Sergeant Major of the Marine Corps on January 19, 2007, succeeding John L. Estrada, and serving until June 9, 2011.
Among his many accolades, SgtMaj Kent is a recipient of the General Gerald C. Thomas Award for inspirational leadership. Beyond his professional achievements, he is known for his dedication to the values and ethos of the Marine Corps, embodying honor, courage, and commitment in every facet of his career.
